MISSION STATEMENT:
The Andy Caress Melanoma Foundation is dedicated to the prevention of melanoma, the most deadly form of skin cancer, through awareness, education and support of research to find a cure.
OUR STORY:
Andy Caress lost his battle with melanoma in August, 2010 at the young age of 24. In his short life, Andy accomplished so much as a college tennis player at Coastal Carolina University, an excellent student, tennis professional, role model, loving son, brother and uncle, and as a source of inspiration for many around the globe suffering from this tragic disease.
The Andy Caress Melanoma Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization. It was formed in May, 2010 by Andy Caress, originally under the name Mela-KNOW-More. It is based in Cincinnati and has volunteers all around the country.
In the early months of the organization’s formation, Andy’s friends and family rallied behind him and raised $10,000 for the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Andy was proud to present the check to Dr. Patrick Hwu, his melanoma oncologist.
During his battle, Andy realized that this disease is often misunderstood by the public as an “easy” or “lucky” cancer to get. His will was to change this misconception and the foundation is keeping that dream alive.
His mission is simple: “My goal is that melanoma will never impact any person the way it has impacted me, and I will achieve my goal by educating the world about how melanoma may be prevented and identified.”
The Andy Caress Melanoma Foundation carries this mission forward after his tragic death. The specific goals of the foundation are consistent with Andy’s mission and include:
- Creating awareness about the seriousness of melanoma and that it affects all skin tones and races
- Educating the public about steps that can be taken to prevent melanoma
- Increasing opportunities for a cure for this deadly disease through work with leading melanoma and cancer research organizations
- “Wipe melanoma off the face of the planet” – in Andy’s words
